Description

Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode for the 42 mm Max Prop propeller acts as active cathodic protection on the submerged metal components of the variable pitch propeller, preventing galvanic corrosion from deteriorating the structural parts of the propulsion assembly. It works in the propulsion system, installing directly on the hub or shaft of the Max Prop propeller, where it is exposed to sea or brackish water and rusts in a controlled manner instead of surrounding noble metals such as bronze or stainless steel. If this anode is completely consumed without being replaced, electrolytic corrosion will directly attack the internal parts of the variable pitch propeller, generating mechanical play, loss of propulsive performance and structural damage requiring costly repairs. Its correct installation and periodic replacement is, therefore, a critical element in the maintenance of any boat equipped with a Max Prop propeller.

When to replace this anode?

Sacrificial anodes must be inspected at least once a season and replaced when they show wear greater than 50% of their mass, are cracked, peel off layers or show areas of active corrosion on the adjacent helix, an unequivocal sign that the cathodic protection is no longer effective. For vessels that navigate in high salinity waters or that remain moored for long periods, it is recommended to check the anode every six months; Under heavy use conditions, replacement may be necessary at the end of each boating season. Preventatively changing the anode during annual beaching is the most economical measure to preserve the integrity of a Max Prop propeller and prevent propulsion system breakdowns outside of port.
