Function and technical context

The 4-rib Poly V timing belt is the component responsible for transmitting power from the crankshaft to engine accessories, such as the alternator, water pump and air conditioning compressor in Mercury 4T EFI petrol engines. Its correct operation is essential to maintain coolant circulation, battery charging and the operation of critical auxiliary systems. Wear or breakage of this belt causes loss of operation of these systems, which can lead to engine overheating, battery discharge, or catastrophic failure if the water pump stops.

When to replace this part?

Poly V belts show obvious signs of aging: superficial cracks, fraying of the edges, audible slipping (squeaking when starting or under load) and loss of tension. Although there is no fixed interval in operating hours, it is advisable to review its condition annually and replace it preventively every 5-7 years or when it shows signs of deterioration, regardless of the hours sailed. Changing the belt preventively avoids running out of cooling systems or electrical charge in critical situations, where a repair in the water can be dangerous and expensive.
