Function and technical context

The zinc pencil anode for Lombardini engines acts as sacrificial cathodic protection, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack vital metal engine components such as the liner, block or heat exchanger. With a diameter of 14 mm, a length of 26 mm and M12 thread, this anode is installed directly in the engine's water cooling circuits, being the first barrier against electrolysis in both fresh and salt water marine environments. Its zinc (ZN) composition guarantees an adequate electrochemical potential to protect the aluminum and steel alloys common in these powertrains. Without effective cathodic protection, internal cooling circuits can become pitted and punctured, leading to serious breakdowns and costly unplanned downtime.

When to replace this part?

A pencil anode worn to more than 50% of its mass must be replaced immediately, as it progressively loses protective effectiveness; Symptoms of insufficient protection include visible pitting on nearby metal surfaces, whitish or greenish deposits around the anode housing, and accelerated corrosion in the engine block. The preventive review and replacement of this type of anodes is recommended at least once per nautical season, or every 200-300 hours of operation in engines with intensive use.
