Function and technical context

This zinc plate anode is specifically designed to protect the metal surfaces of Hamilton Jet propulsion units from galvanic corrosion, one of the most destructive phenomena in marine environments. It acts as a sacrificial anode: being the most reactive metal in the electrochemical circuit, it preferentially corrodes and preserves the structural components of the water jet – casing, rotor, nozzle and other stainless steel or aluminum elements – intact. With dimensions of 118 x 59 mm, this plate is installed directly on the exterior surface of the Hamilton Jet unit, guaranteeing effective cathodic coverage in the area of ​​​​highest electrolytic exposure. Without adequate galvanic protection, corrosion advances silently on the noble metals of the propulsion, compromising the structural integrity of components that are difficult and expensive to repair.

When to replace this part?

The unequivocal symptom that a zinc anode has completed its cycle is the visible loss of mass: when the anode has consumed more than 50% of its volume, it must be replaced immediately, since it loses protective effectiveness even though it is still physically present. The inspection and replacement of the sacrificial anodes must be carried out at least once per nautical season, and whenever the boat remains anchored or docked for prolonged periods in salt or brackish water. Replacing the anode preventively at the beginning of each season is the most recommended practice by nautical maintenance technicians: the cost of an anode is insignificant compared to the repair or replacement of the propulsion unit damaged by galvanic corrosion.
