ANODO PLACA ARNESON 147X65 (ZN)
Description
Function and technical context
The plate anode for Arneson drives acts as a galvanic sacrifice, protecting itself through controlled corrosion to preserve the most valuable metal parts of the propulsion system. Integrated into the Arneson drive assembly, this zinc (Zn) anode measuring 147x65 mm works within the boat's cathodic protection system, neutralizing the galvanic currents that are generated when immersing different metals in seawater. Its correct presence in the assembly is critical: without effective anodic protection, the aluminum housings and bronze components of the surface drive are exposed to pitting and accelerated corrosion that can compromise the structural integrity of the transmission system and lead to costly repairs to the shaft or the drive itself.
When to replace this part?
Zinc anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, have a completely blackened surface, or show cracks that reduce their electrical contact effectiveness. In boats that frequently sail in waters with high conductivity or that remain docked for long periods, wear can be significantly faster, so a review every 6 months is recommended. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely exhausted is the most economical measure to avoid galvanic degradation of Arneson drive components whose repair or replacement has a much higher cost.
