Description

Function and technical context

The zinc anode for Varifold 4-blade propeller with Ø67 mm diameter acts as a sacrificial galvanic protector, absorbing electrolytic corrosion that would otherwise directly attack the metal of the propeller and adjacent transmission components. This element is part of the boat's cathodic protection system, located in the area of maximum exposure to salt or brackish water: the hub and shaft of the Varifold variable pitch propeller. Without effective galvanic protection, corrosion can degrade the propeller alloy, cause play in the pitch variation mechanism and compromise the structural integrity of the blades, with the consequent risk of loss of propulsion. The specific Ø67 mm geometry guarantees a precise fit on the 4-blade Varifold propeller, ensuring optimal electrical contact and a homogeneous distribution of cathodic protection.

When to replace this part?

The anodes must be inspected at least at the beginning and end of each sailing season: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its mass, it is essential to immediately replace it to maintain active protection on the propeller and shaft. Symptoms of a depleted or missing anode include visible pitting on the propeller blades, erosion on the Varifold propeller hub and, in advanced cases, sticking or stiffness in the pitch change mechanism. Replacing the anode preventively at each grounding is the practice recommended by professional nautical workshops: the cost of an anode is notably lower than that of repairing a propeller or shaft damaged by galvanic corrosion.
