Description

Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the key component of the cathodic protection system on vessels, acting as an electrochemical barrier that prevents galvanic corrosion on the submerged metal parts of the hull, tailshaft, propeller and stern hardware. This aluminum teardrop anode is specifically designed to be welded directly onto metal surfaces of the boat, ensuring permanent and reliable electrical contact without relying on screws or mechanical fasteners that may loosen over time. Being made of aluminum, it is the optimal choice for brackish and marine waters, since it offers a higher protection capacity than zinc anodes in these environments and is respectful of the environmental regulations in force in many European ports. The teardrop shape facilitates its installation in areas of irregular geometry, distributing the cathodic protection homogeneously over the surrounding area.

When to replace this part?

A sacrificial anode should be replaced when it has lost approximately 50% of its mass, as below that level it no longer offers effective protection and adjacent metal parts begin to suffer from corrosion pitting, discoloration and surface degradation. The inspection should be carried out at least once a season, coinciding with the annual beaching of the boat, although in areas of high electrolyte activity or particularly aggressive waters a semi-annual inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively before it is completely depleted is the most economical measure to avoid serious damage to the shaft, propeller or hull, the repair of which can multiply by ten the cost of a simple new anode.
