Function and technical context

This zinc hull bar is a rectangular profile sacrificial anode designed to protect the hull and submerged metal elements of the vessel from galvanic corrosion. It acts within the cathodic protection system of the boat, offering itself as an active metal that is preferably consumed before the noble metallic surfaces of the hull, propeller, shaft and bronze or stainless steel accessories. The correct installation of zinc anodes in salt and brackish water is essential to preserve the structural integrity of the livework throughout the entire navigation season. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can rapidly degrade critical components of the hull, transmission or propulsion system, leading to costly breakdowns and compromising the safety of the vessel.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at least once a season, or each time the boat leaves the water for beaching or careening. The unequivocal sign that replacement is necessary is when the anode has lost around 50% of its mass, presents a very irregular surface or has been reduced to a residual core with no effective protective capacity; A depleted anode leaves the metals of the hull, propeller and shaft unprotected, which begin to corrode rapidly. Preventively replacing the zinc anodes at each annual docking is the practice recommended by shipyards and naval mechanics to avoid irreversible damage to the hull and prolong the useful life of all submerged metal components.
