Description

Function and technical context

This aluminum anode for Caterpillar engines acts as a sacrificial electrode within the boat's galvanic protection system, protecting it from electrolytic corrosion that affects metal parts submerged in water. Being manufactured in aluminum (AL), it is especially suitable for use in salty and brackish waters, where galvanic activity is more aggressive and destructive. The anode corrodes in a controlled and progressive manner instead of the structural components of the engine - casings, impellers, shafts and metal hulls - thus preserving the mechanical integrity of the powertrain. With a diameter of 12 mm and length of 40 mm (Ø12 L40), this rod anode is installed in the protection points provided by Caterpillar for its 2280 series marine engines.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that the anode needs to be replaced is a visible reduction in its mass: when the anode has lost approximately 50% of its volume, it has reached its useful life and no longer offers sufficient protection. If incipient corrosion is observed on metal surfaces of the engine or hull that normally remain protected, it is a sign that the anode is exhausted or has completely disappeared. The recommended replacement for anodes in marine environments is annual, coinciding with the seasonal tune-up, although in areas of high salinity or with the boat in the water all year round it is advisable to check it every six months. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical maintenance measure to avoid serious damage to expensive-to-replace components such as shafts, propellers or motor casings.
