Function and technical context

Magnesium sacrificial anodes act as a passive cathodic protection element in submerged propulsion systems, oxidizing preferentially compared to more noble metals such as iron and aluminum that make up the internal components of the Volvo Penta SX-A. This kit groups together all the sacrificial elements necessary to cover the critical areas of the propulsion and cooling circuit, including the areas most exposed to galvanic corrosion in salt water environments. Without active and correctly sized cathodic protection, the structural components of the transmission system and the metal casings of the powertrain would suffer accelerated degradation that would compromise both the tightness and mechanical integrity of the assembly. Magnesium is the most suitable sacrificial material for vessels that operate exclusively in salt or brackish water, since its electrochemical potential guarantees effective protection against aggressive galvanic torques.

When to replace this part?

Magnesium anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season, and replaced when they have lost approximately 50% of their mass, show irregular erosion, or show signs of detachment at the attachment points. An unmistakable symptom of exhausted or missing anodes is the appearance of pitting, whitish spots or visible corrosion on the aluminum surfaces of the drive unit and the leg housing. It is recommended to renew the complete kit preventively during each annual seasonal maintenance, since the cost of the anodes is significantly lower than that of repairing structural components damaged by advanced galvanic corrosion.
