Description

Function and technical context

This 90º brass female/female elbow is a naval plumbing accessory designed to change the direction of pipe routing in onboard installations, allowing the route of a 3/4 inch threaded pipe to be rotated 90 degrees. It is commonly used in seawater cooling systems, fresh water circuits, boat sanitary installations and bilge pipes, where the physical space or hull design requires the flow of fluid to be redirected at right angles. Brass is the reference material in these nautical applications due to its high resistance to corrosion in humid and saline environments, its mechanical robustness against vibrations and its compatibility with standard BSP threads. An elbow in poor condition can cause leaks in the cooling circuit or in the drinking water pipes on board, with consequences ranging from engine overheating to water entering sensitive areas of the boat.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a brass elbow are the appearance of greenish or whitish stains due to galvanic oxidation in the threaded joint, persistent micro-drips that are not corrected by tightening the connection, and visible deformation or cracking of the body after repeated shocks or thermal cycles. It is recommended that you visually inspect all threaded fittings at each seasonal maintenance, paying special attention to joints located in hard-to-reach areas where moisture accumulates. Preventively replacing a cracked elbow before the sailing season prevents breakdowns in the water system at sea, where an emergency repair is always more expensive and complex.
