Function and technical context
The head cover gasket is a critical sealing element that seals the joint between the head cover and the engine block in Mercury 8 and 9.9 hp engines. This piece works in the engine lubrication and cooling system, preventing oil and coolant leaks between both components. Its deterioration causes fluid losses, water entry into the crankcase, localized overheating and, consequently, a significant decrease in engine performance and reliability.
When to replace this part?
Signs of aging of this gasket include oil or coolant stains under the cylinder head cover, abnormal vapor emanations from the engine and progressive loss of fluids without apparent cause in the oil or coolant level. It is recommended to inspect and replace preventively every two seasons of intensive navigation or when any intervention is carried out that requires removing the cylinder head cover. Replacing it preventively avoids unexpected stops in the water and much more expensive repairs derived from cross-contamination of fluids.
