Function and technical context

The cylinder head cover gasket is a critical sealing component in the four-stroke engine block, responsible for sealing the joint between the valve cover and the cylinder head, preventing the leakage of lubricating oil to the outside of the engine. It works within the lubrication system, acting as a hermetic barrier against pressure and temperature variations that occur in the valve chamber during the operation of the outboard propeller. If this gasket deteriorates, the oil begins to escape through the upper part of the engine, potentially contaminating other components, creating a risk of fire on hot surfaces and compromising the internal lubrication pressure, with consequent consequences on the useful life of the engine.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of deterioration in a cylinder head cover gasket are the appearance of traces of oil or dark stains in the upper area of the engine, the smell of burning oil during navigation and, in advanced cases, a decreasing oil level without apparent cause of internal consumption. It is recommended to inspect the gasket at each seasonal maintenance and replace it if there is any sign of leakage, as a gasket in poor condition can quickly progress to significant oil loss while boating. Replacing it preventively when detecting the first symptoms avoids major breakdowns and unplanned stops in the water.
