Function and technical context

The water intake flap is the component responsible for channeling seawater into the cooling circuit of the outboard motor, capturing the flow through the body of the motor and directing it towards the water pump. This element works within the water cooling system, which is the lifeline of the engine: without adequate flow, the block temperature rises uncontrollably. The square geometry of this piece determines the precise fit on the engine cavity, guaranteeing effective capture and tightness that prevents air from entering the circuit. A deterioration or breakage of the ear flap directly compromises the water supply to the impeller, with the consequent risk of severe overheating and irreparable damage to the head or engine block.

When to replace this part?

The most common symptoms of a water intake flap in poor condition are the reduction or absence of the control water jet (the so-called "mirror"), overheating of the engine despite having the impeller in good condition, and the presence of visible cracks or deformations in the rubber or in the body of the part. It is recommended to inspect it at each seasonal inspection and, as a general rule, replace it whenever the water pump impeller is changed, since both parts work in the same assembly and share a life cycle. Replacing it preventively is a simple and economical intervention that prevents serious navigation breakdowns.
