Function and technical context

This zinc anode acts as a sacrificial element in the outboard motor's cathodic protection system, absorbing galvanic corrosion that would otherwise attack the structural metal parts of the powertrain: the tail housing, engine mount and aluminum transmission components. When submerged in salt or brackish water, zinc oxidizes preferentially compared to the nobler metals that make up the block and transmission, preserving its integrity. Without effective cathodic protection, electrolytic corrosion can destroy high-cost parts such as the stern foot, propeller or engine mounts in just a few seasons.

When to replace this part?

Zinc anodes should be inspected at the beginning and end of each nautical season: when the anode has lost approximately half of its mass or presents an irregular and porous surface, it is time to replace it without delay. In waters with a high concentration of salt or in boats that remain in the water continuously, wear can be significantly faster, which is why a check is recommended every 100-150 hours of navigation. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure to avoid corrosion damage to much higher value components.
