Function and technical context

The sacrificial anode is an essential component in the cathodic protection of marine engines submerged or in permanent contact with salt water. Installed in the engine casing, it acts as an electrochemical barrier to prevent galvanic corrosion of the aluminum and steel of the engine block. The anode material degrades by preferentially absorbing corrosive ions from seawater, significantly extending the life of critical parts such as the cooling pump, internal passages and engine body. Without this protection, advanced oxidation compromises the tightness of joints, causes coolant leaks and drastically reduces navigation reliability.

When to replace this part?

Sacrificial anodes require inspection and preventive replacement at the end of each sailing season or after 12 months of use, since their wear is progressive and invisible from the outside. If the anode is significantly reduced, discolored or exhibits accelerated erosion, cathodic protection is compromised and the risk of internal engine oxidation increases exponentially. Preventive replacement is especially critical after intensive seasons or in waters with high saline content, avoiding costly repairs due to advanced corrosion that can put the boat out of service on the high seas.
