Function and technical context

Sacrificial anodes are the passive cathodic protection system that preserves the submerged metal components of a vessel against galvanic corrosion. This 27 mm Dufour anode acts as a sacrificial electrode: being made of an alloy with a lower electrochemical potential than the structural metals of the hull, shaft or propeller, it is it that corrodes instead of the parts it protects. Its correct installation is critical in hulls, drive shafts, rudder arms and any area exposed to marine electrolysis, whether in salt, brackish or fresh water. Without adequate cathodic protection, galvanic corrosion can rapidly degrade bronze, stainless steel or aluminum parts, leading to costly breakdowns and structural risks.

When to replace this part?

The clearest symptom that an anode needs replacement is the visible reduction in its mass: when it has lost approximately half of its volume, it must be replaced without delay, since its protection capacity is compromised. The maintenance intervals recommended by manufacturers place the inspection at each beaching or, at least, once per nautical season, although in areas with high electrical conductivity or waters with high salinity a more frequent inspection may be necessary. Replacing the anode preventively is the most economical measure possible compared to the cost of repairing or replacing shafts, propellers or hull accessories damaged by corrosion.
