Function and Technical Context

This sacrificial anode is specifically designed for OMC Cobra outboard engines with power ratings between 130 and 385 HP, acting as a cathodic protection element in the anti-electrolytic system of the propulsion unit. Its function is to attract galvanic corrosion generated by contact between dissimilar metals and saltwater or brackish water, consuming itself instead of the engine's metal components. Without a sacrificial anode in proper condition, the surfaces of the block, transmission housing and other metal elements are exposed to accelerated corrosion that can cause irreversible structural damage and costly repairs. This reference replaces manufacturer parts 983952 and 984547, corresponding to the anode and insert assembly (ANODE & INSERT ASSY), which guarantees full functional compatibility with the engine's cathodic protection system.

When to Replace This Part?

Sacrificial anodes should be inspected at the start of each boating season and replaced when they have lost between 50% and 60% of their mass, without waiting for them to be completely consumed. An excessively worn anode ceases to protect effectively and allows galvanic corrosion to attack the engine's metal components directly, including the shaft, propeller and lower unit. On vessels that regularly navigate in saltwater or areas with high electrical conductivity, it is recommended to check the anode condition every 150-200 hours of operation or at least once a year; preventive replacement is the most economical measure to avoid serious breakdowns at sea.
